SEAL YOUR HOME FROM THE ELEMENTSInsulation
Proper insulation can mean a world of difference to both your comfort and the amount you pay to heat or cool your home. Since a drafty home will have higher heating/cooling bills, follow these practical insulation tips to save money:
- Decide what areas need insulation.
- Next, choose the appropriate type of insulation. Certain types work better than others, depending on what you're insulating. The higher the "R" value, the more resistance to heat flow.
- Make sure you follow package instructions. Most brands come with easy-to-follow directions for installation.
- When installing or removing insulation, dress safely by wearing a long-sleeve shirt, long pants, safety glasses and an approved respirator.
Infiltration
Infiltration occurs when unconditioned air (cold air in the winter or warm air in the summer) penetrates a conditioned space. You can take several measures to reduce infiltration for greater comfort and energy efficiency. The best time to reduce infiltration losses is during construction and renovation, when stud cavities are accessible on outside walls. Caulking is applied where the stud meets the outside sheathing and where wires and/or pipes enter or exit an unconditioned space.
In existing homes, you can reduce infiltration by:
- Weather-stripping doors, windows and any other area where air moves between conditioned and unconditioned space.
- Adding storm doors and windows.
- Using foam receptacles and switch gaskets.
- Caulking around the exterior doors and windows.
- Using fireplace enclosures.
