Several widely-recognized companies have at least a portion of their fleets running on natural gas, including ATT, Verizon, UPS and Federal Express. This adoption of NGVs by large companies helps to increase the number of public-access refueling stations.
About NGVs
When compared to gasoline, natural gas currently costs about 1/3 less. (And, it is anticipated natural gas will cost about 50% less than gasoline by 2035.)
When compared to diesel, natural gas is currently about 50% less expensive.
The use of natural gas for vehicles in the transportation sector (buses, waste management, fleets, airports) continues to grow annually.
Natural gas used for vehicles is called CNG (compressed natural gas).
About Converting
Before converting a personal vehicle (or light duty work trucks under 14,000 pounds) to natural gas, make sure there is a public fueling station near you.
Cars can be converted as a “dedicated” (runs solely on natural gas) or “dual-fuel” (runs both on natural gas and gasoline).
If you have natural gas service at your home or business, it imight be possible to add a CNG fueling device at your location.
It costs between $12,000 - $18,000 to convert a gasoline-fired or diesel-fired engine to burn compressed natural gas. (Cost is impacted by your car’s fuel capacity.)
Typically, after market conversions do not void manufacturer warranties if the work is done by a certified up-fitter, but it’s best to check with your vehicle’s manufacturer.
