Protect your meter from potentially hazardous situations:
Keep the area around your meter free of overgrown brush and obstacles. This will allow safe and easy access for our meter readers to read and inspect your meter, and for our technicians to make any repairs in case of an emergency.
Your meter and the shut-off valve leading to the meter needs to be unobstructed at all times. Do not build a deck over your meter, box the meter in with any building material, plant bushes too closely to the meter, or back fill or change the grade of the meter that restricts access. This may cause our employees injury and delays in emergency response.
Protect your meter from vehicular damage (i.e., cars, boats, trailers, mobile homes, ATV’s, etc.)
Do not stack equipment near the meter.
Do not chain anything to the meter.
Do not allow children to sit or play on the meter. The extra weight and strain can damage both the meter and connecting pipes.
Clear a path to your meter in times of snow or inclement weather. A blocked meter can hinder access in the event of an emergency.
To ensure safe and efficient operation, never allow snow or ice to cover your natural gas meter, its pressure regulator or vent, or appliance air inlets or exhaust outlets.
Clean and repair leaky seams in your eaves, gutters and downspouts to prevent melting snow and ice from dripping onto the meter or pressure regulator. This can cause your meter to be encased in ice when the temperature drops.
Accumulated snow and ice can prevent the meter from operating properly by stopping the flow of natural gas. Gently remove snow or ice from the meter, using only a broom or your hand if possible. Do not try to break up or remove ice or frozen snow from your meter, pressure regulator, or piping. If you find your meter or pressure regulator covered in frozen ice or snow, do not make any attempt to remove the ice or use de-icer. Contact UGI’s emergency number and our technicians will take appropriate steps to rectify the problem.
Avoid using a snow blower, snow plow or a sharp-edged tool near your meter, pressure regulator or appliance vents.
Do not tamper with your meter, or attempt to service or maintain the meter yourself.
Call UGI at (800) 609-4844 immediately if you damage the meter or smell gas around the meter.
