We offer our customers the following winter safety tips to keep you and your family safe when winter weather arrives.
Always clear snow and ice from the outside vents for your furnace or other gas appliances. This allows air flow for proper operation. Gently remove snow or ice from the meter, using only a broom or your hand if possible. Do not try to break up or remove ice or frozen snow from your meter, pressure regulator, or piping. If you find your meter or pressure regulator covered in frozen ice or snow, do not make any attempt to remove the ice or use de-icer. Contact UGI's emergency number and our technicians will take appropriate steps to rectify the problem.
If the snow is deep you should clear the area around the gas meter, providing a path for UGI personnel who may require access. Please work carefully around your gas meter. Keep snow blowers, snow plows and sharp-edged tools away from the gas meter.
Clean and repair leaky seams in your eaves, gutters and downspouts to prevent melting snow and ice from dropping onto the meter or pressure regulator.
A harmless odor, which smells like rotten eggs, is added to Natural Gas to help you detect a gas leak. If you smell this strong odor, leave the building immediately, taking everyone with you. Do not use the phone, light a match, or switch anything off or on. Leave the door(s) open when you leave the house. Once outside, call UGI from a neighbor's home or cell phone. UGI will send a service technician to investigate the odor right away. Emergency response is available 24-hours a day, every day.
