Fall is fast approaching, which means teachers and students across the Commonwealth are preparing to return to the classroom for another year of learning. In honor of the upcoming school year, UGI has chosen Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) as this month’s Feature Community Organization.
The nation’s largest literacy nonprofit organization, RIF works to encourage school children to reach their full potential through the power of reading. One of several nonprofit organizations supported by UGI, RIF distributes free books to elementary-aged children across the country. Founded in 1966 by Margaret McNamara and a group of local teachers and volunteers in Washington, D.C., RIF has distributed more than 412 million new books to children in need.
2017 marks the 26th year since UGI launched its award-winning early childhood literacy partnership with RIF. During this time, UGI has provided more than 1.3 million books to more than 400,000 first-grade students across UGI’s service territory. This academic year alone, UGI employee volunteers have distributed over 54,000 books to more than 18,000 students throughout our service territory.
