UGI Announces Mahoning Township Infrastructure Betterment Project

UGI will begin a natural gas main replacement project in Mahoning Township, between Lehighton and Packerton, beginning the week of August 1. UGI’s Mahoning Township project will replace approximately 2200 feet of an existing bare steel natural gas main with contemporary high-density plastic. This project is part of the Company’s multi-year $1.2 billion infrastructure betterment initiative.

The natural gas main improvement project will be take place on Route 209 between Packerton Hollow Lane and Beaver Drive.

The project is expected to last approximately 12 weeks and is expected to be completed by the end of October. Natural gas main replacement construction will occur in the evening between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday, weather permitting.

Residents and drivers traveling in area should note that lane restrictions will be in effect during the project, and should consider alternate routes. Motorists driving through the construction zone are urged to watch for roadwork signs, and to follow the directions of flag personnel.

In addition, residents may be affected by the noise of equipment during overnight construction hours.

“UGI recognizes township residents will be inconvenienced during this project. We will work to complete construction in a timely manner,” Robert P. Krieger, vice president of operations, said. “This project is part of UGI’s continuing commitment to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to our customers and our communities. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we make this long-term system improvement. We also thank Mahoning Township for their cooperation and assistance in the planning and execution of this project.”

UGI will spend more than $150 million in fiscal year 2016 to replace natural gas mains and complete a variety of system enhancement projects. Approximately 64 miles of cast iron and bare steel mains are targeted for replacement this year. Since beginning this initiative, UGI has retired nearly 200 miles of non-contemporary pipelines.
