UGI Utilities, Inc. will begin a natural gas main replacement project on 5th Street in the City of Reading beginning in early May. This project is part of the Company’s multi-year infrastructure betterment initiative.
The natural gas main replacement project will take place on South 5th Street from Penn Street through the 400 block and on North 5th Street from Penn Street through the 100 block. Several intersecting streets will also be affected by this project including:
- Cherry Street from South 5th Street to South 6th Street;
- Spruce Street from South 5th Street to Pearl Street;
- Bingaman Street from South 5th Street to Wood Street.
More than 5,600 feet of non-contemporary main will be replaced. This project will also renew gas service lines to approximately 166 homes and businesses along the route.
UGI will perform all work with enhanced safety protocols consistent with orders from Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf.
Construction hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. During construction, residents will experience traffic delays and road closures. Parking also will be restricted on those blocks during construction hours. Flaggers will direct traffic during construction.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of September.
“UGI recognizes area residents will be inconvenienced during this project. We will work to complete construction in a timely manner,” Timothy Angstadt, Vice President of Operations, said. “This project is part of UGI’s continuing commitment to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to our customers and our communities. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we make this long-term system improvement. We also thank officials from the City of Reading and PennDOT for their cooperation and assistance in the planning and execution of this project.”
