UGI Begins 26th Year of Early Childhood Literacy Partnership
23 Feb 2017
Reading, PA – February 2017 marks the 26th year since UGI launched its award-winning early childhood literacy partnership with Reading Is Fundamental. During that time, UGI has provided over 1.3 million books to more than 400,000 first-grade students in hundreds of schools across Pennsylvania.
During the 2016-2017 academic year alone, UGI and its employee volunteers will distribute over 54,000 books to more than 18,000 students.
A critical component of the UGI-RIF program is the active participation of employees. More than one-third of UGI’s 1,600 employees participate in school book distributions each year. Since the inception of the program, UGI employees have donated nearly 20,000 hours of volunteer time to promote early childhood literacy. Employee participation is encouraged through UGI’s time release policy, which provides 16 hours of paid time off each year to volunteer for education-related activities.
