(April 13, 2012) – UGI Utilities, Inc., is supporting active military personnel in local communities as part of its celebration of National Volunteer Week, which begins Sunday and continues through April 21.
“Every year, UGI commemorates National Volunteer Week with special activities conducted across our 45-county Pennsylvania service area to help residents of our communities,’’ said Robert F. Beard, President and CEO. “This year, we are raising funds, through raffles and other means, to aid our servicemen and women whose sacrifice and service ensures our freedom.’’
Each UGI local office is holding fundraising events for a designated local military organization (e.g., USO, Army Reserve, National Guard, etc.) to support a selected area project. Additionally, UGI will hold a week-long social media campaign to benefit Operation Homefront of PA & DE; $5 will be donated to Operation Homefront for every new “like” or follow received on UGI’s Facebook (www.facebook.com/ugiutilities), Twitter (@ugi_utilities) or blog (http://blog.ugi.com).
To further celebrate National Volunteer Week, UGI will be holding special book distributions as part of its highly successful and unique motivational reading partnership with the Reading Is Fundamental® (RIF) children’s literacy organization, now in its 21st year.
UGI Electric Division and Penn Natural Gas employees will participate in distributions Wednesday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m. at the Scranton School District’s Isaac Tripp Elementary School, 1000 N. Everett Avenue; Thursday, April 19 at 10:35 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre School District’s Dr. David W. Kistler Elementary School, 301 Old River Road; and Friday, April 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre School District’s Boyd Dodson Elementary School, 80 Jones St. “The Reading Wizard,” a UGI-created character, will be in attendance at the Tripp school distribution.
These activities are among many UGI employee volunteer initiatives conducted throughout the year. In addition to special fundraising programs, UGI recognizes employees who are involved in community and education activities during National Volunteer Week.
Approximately 1/3 of UGI’s near 1,400 employees devoted more than 42,000 hours to volunteer service in 2011, benefiting organizations including RIF, the United Way, the American Cancer Society, Easter Seal Society, March of Dimes and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
