UGI Construction Project to Purge Gas Pipeline on September 3

03 Sep 2013

UGI Penn Natural Gas advises local residents that as part of a natural gas main project along Nicholson Street in Wilkes-Barre Township, odorized natural gas will be purged from a pipeline and vented to the atmosphere in a controlled, safe release.

This work is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday September 3. The work is scheduled to begin at approximately 7:00 am.  Purging activity is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:30 am.

During the purging process, individuals in the area could hear a hissing sound, and might detect the smell of mercaptan, the odorant added to natural gas that makes it smell like rotten eggs. This may affect several blocks around the construction area.

The purging process is expected to conclude at approximately 12:30 pm.  Please note that schedule is tentative and may change due to outside factors, including weather.

Individuals who smell gas and are concerned are urged to immediately call UGI at 1-800-276-2722. As always, UGI will respond to all inquiries regarding the odor of natural gas.

Residents living and traveling in the area should also be aware that the utility work will potentially impact local traffic. We ask individuals driving through this area to assist UGI in completing the work as quickly as possible by complying with travel lane and parking restrictions posted in the construction area.

UGI thanks residents you for your cooperation, understanding and patience during this project.
