UGI Donating Personal Care Goods to Local Shelters

16 Apr 2009

UGI Utilities, Inc., in conjunction with National Volunteer Week – which begins Sunday and continues through April 25 – is supplying personal care items for individuals and families living in shelters.

Through employee contributions, homeless men, women and children will receive goods including soap, shampoo, body lotion, deodorant and hand lotion.

In the Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport and Scranton areas, personal care items will be donated to the Domestic Violence Services Center, 13 E. South St., WilkesBarre; Wise Options, 815 W. Fourth St., Williamsport; and the Women’s Resource Center, P.O. Box 975, Scranton.

“Many in our communities face terrible misfortune and cannot enjoy the basic comforts of living in their own home,’’ said Dave Trego, President and CEO –UGI Utilities. “We understand that circumstances like these could happen to any of us and empathize with these individuals and families. We hope that receiving these items will, in some small way, help in restoring their lives and brightening their outlook.’’

The personal care drive is one of many volunteer initiatives by UGI employees throughout the year. During National Volunteer Week, UGI recognizes employees who are involved in community and education activities throughout the previous year. These efforts include UGI’s signature motivational-reading partnership with the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF™) children’s literacy
organization, as well as its strong support of hundreds of organizations including the United Way, the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Easter Seal Society and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

UGI Penn Natural Gas and Electric Division employees will be volunteering at soup kitchens in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton during National Volunteer Week.In addition, UGI Penn Natural Gas employees will participate in RIF book distributions Tuesday, April 21, at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School, 7 Prospect Ave., Scranton, and Wednesday, April 22 at Cochran Elementary
School, 1500 Cherry St., Williamsport. The Wednesday event will feature an appearance by “The Reading Wizard,’’ a UGI-created character that symbolizes that reading is both important and fun for children.

In 2008, more than 500 of UGI’s 1,482 employees (nearly 34 percent) devoted 42,296 hours to community and education volunteer service.
