READING, PA, May 11, 2015 – UGI Utilities, Inc. announced that beginning Wednesday, May 13, UGI will upgrade infrastructure on the west side of 2nd Street between Walnut Street and South Street. Natural gas main and service line replacement work on the east side of 2nd Street was completed in 2014. UGI expects this section of 2nd Street to be completed by the end of the summer.
Work will be performed on 2nd Street between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Commuters are alerted that one lane of 2nd Street will be closed each weekday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Commuters may experience some traffic delays.
Residents and commuters are reminded UGI is currently working on downtown infrastructure betterment projects on Market Street between 4th Street and Aberdeen Street, and on 4th Street between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street. These projects are being completed prior to the scheduled street paving by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
Parking will be restricted on blocks under construction during work hours. Construction may also affect sidewalk access. UGI will provide alternate walkways in areas where high pedestrian traffic normally occurs.
UGI has been in contact with residents and businesses affected by this project, and is working with are businesses to minimize disruption of their operation. Whenever appropriate, UGI will replace service lines leading to homes and businesses during the main replacement project and, in some cases, will need to gain access to these buildings.
All of these projects are part of Phase VI of a multi-year initiative focused on the Harrisburg downtown area. These efforts are associated with UGI’s commitment to provide safe and reliable energy service to the Harrisburg community. With the completion of the 2015 projects and one additional phase scheduled for 2016, UGI will have upgraded all of its natural gas distribution pipeline infrastructure from the Capitol Complex to the Susquehanna River from North Street to Walnut Street.
Previous phases of the infrastructure betterment project upgraded UGI gas mains on portions of North 3rd Street and North 2nd Street, as well as North Street, Liberty Street Commonwealth Avenue, Walnut Street, and Front Street.
“UGI recognizes that some residents will be inconvenienced during this ongoing project and will work to complete construction in a timely manner,” Robert P. Krieger, vice president of operations, said. “This project is part of UGI’s continuing commitment to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to our customers and our communities and we appreciate our customers’ and the community’s understanding as we make these long-term system improvements. We also thank the City of Harrisburg for their cooperation and assistance in planning and executing these efforts.”
This latest phase of the project is part of the Company’s multi-year $1.2 billion infrastructure betterment initiative. UGI’s 2014 infrastructure betterment plan calls for the Company to spend approximately $85 million to replace an additional 62 miles of cast iron and bare steel mains, in addition to completing a variety of system enhancement projects. The Downtown Harrisburg project will replace cast iron mains with high-density plastic and cathodically-protected steel.
