Reading, PA – UGI Utilities, Inc. will mark the 25th anniversary of its award-winning partnership with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) during National Volunteer Week beginning Sunday, April 10.
The UGI-RIF partnership encourages early childhood literacy by providing free books to first-grade students throughout UGI’s service area. Over the past 25 years, UGI has distributed over 1.2 million books to more than 400,000 students. UGI employees have provided over 15,000 hours of volunteer service reading to children, helping with book distributions, and appearing as UGI’s costumed character, The Reading Wizard.
UGI will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the UGI-RIF partnership with a special birthday party at McBride Memorial Library, 500 North Market Street, Berwick, on Saturday, April 16 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Families are invited to attend the event, and elementary school age children will receive a free book while supplies last. The Reading Wizard will attend the celebration.
During National Volunteer Week, UGI also will recognize employees who have volunteered for nonprofit organizations such as United Way, the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Meals on Wheels, local food banks and many other local and regional initiatives. More than 625 UGI employees contributed over 48,300 hours of volunteer service during 2015. These employee volunteer efforts helped to ensure the vitality and well-being of the many communities across the UGI service territory.
“The number of employees who volunteered time to assist our communities, as well as the number of hours donated to deliver critical services to our neighbors in need, both substantially increased over the past year,” Robert F. Beard, UGI president and CEO, said.
Mr. Beard made special note of UGI’s long-standing partnership with Reading Is Fundamental.
