UGI Penn Natural Gas to Begin Williamsport Infrastructure Betterment Project

24 Jun 2014

READING, PA, June 23, 2014 – UGI Penn Natural Gas will begin a natural gas main replacement project in the City of Williamsport on Tuesday, June 24, 2014.  This project is part of the Company’s multi-year $1.2 billion infrastructure betterment initiative designed to replace cast iron and unprotected steel pipelines with facilities made of contemporary materials.

The project replaces approximately 3400 feet of pipe in the following streets:

  • The 1200 and 1300 blocks of Cherry and Locust Streets;
  • Part of the 500 block of Vernon Avenue;
  • Parts of the 400 and 500 blocks of Oakland Avenue;
  • The 500 block of Belmont Avenue.

Natural gas main replacement construction will generally be performed from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Motorists may experience some traffic delays due to this work.  Construction is expected to take approximately seven-to-eight weeks.

Customers should be aware that gas service line and meter work associated with individual homes and businesses will also be performed as part of the construction project during those times.  UGI will require access into homes and businesses along the route when service line work is conducted.

“UGI recognizes that some residents will be inconvenienced during this project and will work to complete construction in a timely manner,” Robert P. Krieger, vice president of operations, said. “This project is part of UGI’s continuing commitment to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to our customers and our communities and we appreciate our customers’ and the community’s understanding as we make these long-term system improvements. We also thank Williamsport for their cooperation and assistance in planning and executing these efforts.”

More than 85 percent of UGI’s 12,000 miles of gas pipelines are currently constructed of contemporary materials. UGI’s 2014 infrastructure betterment plan calls for the Company to spend approximately $85 million to replace about 65 miles of cast iron and bare steel mains. In addition, UGI will complete a variety of system enhancement projects. The Williamsport project will replaces existing cast iron and steel mains with high density plastic.

This construction project also provides an opportunity for homes and businesses without natural gas service to convert to natural gas. Homeowners who convert can save more than $1,500 per year in energy bills. UGI encourages those along the project route to contact the company at (800) 276-2722 if they are interested in converting to natural gas during construction.

UGI is a natural gas and electric utility company that serves approximately 660,000 customers.
