UGI Urges Eligible Customers to Apply for Energy Assistance Grants

27 Oct 2015

READING, PA – UGI encourages eligible natural gas and electric customers to apply for federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds to help cover the cost of heating their home this winter.

LIHEAP grants do not need to be repaid and help customers with limited or fixed incomes pay their heating bills, repair or replace a heater, avoid utility service shut off, and assist in restoring a terminated service. UGI will provide customers with information on the application process, and also provide assistance on completing and submitting the required forms.

Last winter, qualifying UGI natural gas and electric customers received cash grants from LIHEAP totaling approximately $9.1 million. More than 39,000 UGI customers received LIHEAP grants.

LIHEAP funds are limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis to qualifying customers. The program opens November 2, so UGI urges customers to apply as soon as possible. For more information on federal energy assistance, customers should call UGI at 1-800-UGI-WARM (1-800-844-9276).

To qualify for LIHEAP funds, a customer must provide proof of income, a recent heating bill, and the name, birth date and Social Security number for each person in his or her household. Income eligibility for LIHEAP is:LIHEAP Image

In addition to providing information and support regarding the LIHEAP Program, UGI offers multiple assistance programs to customers experiencing difficulty paying utility bills.  Customers interested in more information regarding these programs are encouraged to contact UGI.  Qualifying low-income customers may receive grants from Operation Share, UGI’s hardship fund; reduced bills based on a percentage of the customer’s income, information on payment arrangements, and free home weatherization services.

UGI Utilities’ headquarters is located in Reading, Pennsylvania.  The utility serves more than 670,000 natural gas and electric customers in 45 counties in Pennsylvania and one county in Maryland.  Additional information about UGI is available at www.ugi.com, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ugiutilities or on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ugi_utilities
