UGI Utilities – Gas Division Provides Progress Update on North 3rd Street Infrastructure Betterment Project

16 Jul 2013

READING, PA, July 16, 2013 – The North 3rd Street, Harrisburg, natural gas main replacement project conducted by UGI Utilities – Gas Division continues to make significant progress as crews move north through the city.

UGI has completed work from Strawberry Street to the intersection of North 3rd and Pine Streets.  UGI will be working in the North 3rd and Pine Streets intersection for the next several days.  Construction is typically slowed in intersections because of the amount of underground utility facilities.  During this time frame, the intersection will be closed to traffic in the evening hours from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.   The intersection will be re-opened to traffic during daytime hours.

When work at the North 3rd and Pine Streets intersection is completed, UGI will commence work between Pine Street and South Street.

In a typical week, construction associated with this project takes place from Sunday evening through Thursday morning. Work is performed during the evening hours from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. to minimize disruption to traffic and businesses within the construction zone.

If inclement weather does not allow construction to take place on one of those work days, work for that week will be extended to Friday morning. Construction will not affect Friday or Saturday evening activities

This project is part of the Company’s multi-year $1.2 billion infrastructure betterment initiative. UGI’s 2013 infrastructure betterment plan calls for the Company to spend approximately $71.1 million to replace an additional 63 miles of cast iron and bare steel mains, in addition to completing a variety of system enhancement projects. The 3rd Street project will replace a cast iron main with high-density plastic and cathodically-protected steel.

UGI is a natural gas and electric utility company that serves approximately 648,000 customers.
