READING, PA, March 24, 2013 – UGI Utilities – Gas Division is completing work on Phase II of its downtown Harrisburg infrastructure betterment initiative this week and will immediately move to the next phase of the project.
Phase II replaced a natural gas main on North 2nd Street from State Street to Walnut Street on the east side of the road. The work began in November 2013, and took longer to complete than anticipated because of this winter’s extreme cold and snowy weather. The first phase of the project was completed last summer. That phase upgraded natural gas infrastructure on North 3rd Street from Strawberry Street to North Street, as well as several adjoining streets.
Phase III of the downtown project will upgrade infrastructure in the following locations:
- The east side of North 2nd Street from North Street to State Street;
- North Street between North 2nd Street and North 3rd Street;
- Liberty Street between North 2nd Street and North 3rd Street.
In addition, construction will occur on several side streets adjoining this project. UGI expects to complete this phase of the Downtown Harrisburg project, as well as two final phases, during 2014.
Work will be performed on Phase III of the project between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, excluding holidays.
Parking will be restricted on blocks under construction during work hours, and streets may be lane restricted from 9 am. to 3 p.m. in affected blocks as necessary. Construction may also affect sidewalk access. UGI will provide alternate walkways as needed.
UGI has been in contact with residents and businesses affected by this project, and is working with are businesses to minimize disruption of their operation. Whenever appropriate, UGI will replace service lines leading to homes and businesses during the main replacement project and, in some cases, will need to gain access to these buildings.
This latest phase of the project is part of the Company’s multi-year $1.2 billion infrastructure betterment initiative. UGI’s 2014 infrastructure betterment plan calls for the Company to spend approximately $85.7 million to replace an additional 67 miles of cast iron and bare steel mains, in addition to completing a variety of system enhancement projects. The Downtown Harrisburg project will replace cast iron main with high-density plastic and cathodically-protected steel.
UGI is a natural gas and electric utility company that serves approximately 660,000 customers.
