UGI Warns Consumers of Potential Phone Scams

Reading, PA – UGI Utilities is warning consumers about potential phone scams where an unauthorized caller poses as a utility representative. Today, UGI was notified by several consumers of suspicious phone calls. In one instance an individual who was not a customer was asked to set up a payment arrangement for a past due UGI bill.
The following information will help consumers recognize legitimate phone calls from UGI:
· A legitimate UGI representative will be able to provide detailed customer account information including name, address, account number, billing/payment history, etc.
· UGI does not offer discounts for prepayment of utility bills.
· UGI residential customers who are behind on their utility bills will receive one or more written collection or termination notices before a UGI representative will call regarding payment.
· A UGI representative who calls regarding a past due bill will offer a number of payment methods, including in-person payment at an authorized payment agent, and will discuss a possible payment arrangement to spread out repayment over time.
· UGI does not directly process any credit or debit card transactions. To pay a UGI bill via credit or debit card a customer must call an authorized, secure third party vendor. This payment center does not initiate phone calls to customers.
Any customer who has concerns about a caller who claims to be collecting payments for UGI should call UGI’s credit department immediately at 1-800-272-9844 to confirm that the phone call was legitimate.
