Winter Weather Gas Safety Alert

Reading, PA (January 9, 2009) – The following tips are provided by UGI Utilities to help keep your natural gas equipment working reliably and safely during winter weather:

· First, always clear snow and ice from the outside vents for your furnace or other gas appliances. This allows the necessary air flow for safe operation.

· If the snow is deep you should clear the area around the gas meter, providing a path for UGI personnel who may require access. Please work carefully around your gas meter. Keep snow blowers and plows away from the gas meter.

· Next, remember that a power outage will affect blowers and newer heaters with electronic ignitions. If your gas heater does not relight when power returns, turn the unit off for a moment, then back on. If it still does not light call a heating professional for service.

· Finally, be aware that a harmless odor, which smells like rotten eggs, is added to natural gas to help you detect a gas leak. If you smell a strong natural gas odor leave the building immediately, taking everyone with you. Do not use the phone, light a match, or switch anything on or off. Leave the door open behind you and call UGI from a neighbor’s home. UGI’s emergency response number is: 1-800-609-4844. UGI will send a service technician to investigate the odor right away. Emergency response is available 24-hours a day, every day. Your safety is always our top priority.
