Carbon Monoxide Safety

Protect Yourself From the Dangers of Poisoning

  1. Natural Gas Safety
  2. Carbon Monoxide Safety

If you are alerted by your CO detector, or if you suspect CO poisoning, move everyone (including pets) to fresh air immediately and call for emergency service.

The incomplete combustion of any fossil fuel can produce carbon monoxide (CO) – an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas. CO can occur with a malfunctioning appliance or blocked chimney.

Protect yourself. Read the facts and follow instructions to maximize your family’s protection:

  • CO can enter living spaces in your home as a result of a malfunctioning appliance or blocked chimney.
  • All fuel-burning equipment should be installed and regularly serviced by an experienced professional.
  • Change or clean furnace filters regularly.
  • All fuel-burning equipment requires proper venting and air flow for safe operation. Do not install equipment in a confined space. When renovating, have a professional specify space required for fuel-burning equipment.
  • Keep interior and exterior air vents clear of blockages.
  • Signs that you may have a CO problem include: water vapor condensing on windows (other than normal bathroom and kitchen moisture), headaches, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, and nausea.
  • Install a CO detector/alarm on each floor of a home, especially near every separate sleeping area. CO detectors have a limited operating life. Check the manufacturer’s instruction for related information and replacement considerations.
  • If you are alerted by your CO detector, or if you suspect CO poisoning, move to fresh air and call UGI at 800-276-2722 or 911.
