Renewable Natural Gas: Breaking Motor Fuel Usage Records

14 Sep 2023

For many years, UGI has been actively helping customers reduce their transportation carbon footprints by supporting natural gas vehicle (NGV) adoption by fleets. A report by Natural Gas Vehicles for America (NGVAmerica) and Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition) found that 69% of all on-road fuel used in natural gas vehicles in 2022 was renewable natural gas (RNG), surpassing the previous year’s record-breaking level.

Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) have a higher octane rating, are more fuel efficient, have lower operating costs and produce fewer emissions than gasoline or diesel engines. As highlighted in the report, RNG use as a motor fuel in 2022 displaced 5.63 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

Why Fuel Your Fleet Vehicles with Natural Gas?

  • Cost Savings: Natural gas costs about 1/3 less than gasoline and about 50% less than diesel.
  • Cleaner: Natural gas produces less exhaust emissions from your vehicle and less carbon than any other fossil fuel.
  • Safe: Natural gas is lighter than air, so it dissipates when released. It doesn’t leak into the ground. Comprehensive standards for fuel tank, vehicle and station design ensure safe operations.

UGI’s own utility fleets in Lancaster, Wilkes-Barre and Williamsport are fueled with compressed natural gas, including cargo vans, connect vans and utility body pickup trucks. The adoption of NGVs by large companies will also help increase the number of public-access refueling stations.
