Natural gas is naturally odorless and colorless. To make natural gas detectable, a chemical known as Mercaptan is added. Mercaptan has a smell similar to rotten eggs.
UGI provides free scratch and sniff brochures annually in the mail for our customers to be aware of this smell and know that if your nose detects this unique odor to contact UGI immediately at 800-276-2722.
