UGI Inspector Turned Lifesaver Says He Just Did What He Needed to Do

30 Sep 2025

What started as a routine job site inspection quickly turned into a life-saving act by a UGI employee.

On a Monday afternoon in early August, Jeremy Reed arrived to inspect a gas main replacement project on Hanover Street in Bethlehem. Shortly after arriving, Jeremy saw a member of a contracted crew collapse inside an excavated area.

“It was a hot day. I heard his labored breathing. He began to look rough. He collapsed and his hard hat flew off his head,” Reed says. “I immediately jumped into the hole and helped pull him out.”

While another worker called 911, Jeremy began giving the collapsed worker CPR—something he had learned during a Red Cross class at UGI.

“I did not think I’d ever have to use what I learned, but I ended up remembering everything and doing it,” Reed says. “When he collapsed, I did not have to think—I just did it.”

Paramedics quickly arrived and took the worker to the emergency room. He survived sudden cardiac arrest, and today he says he hopes Jeremy gets the recognition he deserves for his quick actions that helped save his life.

“I do not think I am a hero,” Reed says. “Others would have done the same thing. I just did what I needed to do.”

Jeremy’s actions exemplify how UGI workers serve the community, going beyond providing safe and reliable energy.
