UGI Rebates Help Carlisle Chamber of Commerce Save Energy and Money

Insulation and air sealing are some of the easiest, least expensive and most effective ways to lower energy consumption in older buildings. The Carlisle Chamber of Commerce recently took advantage of an $8,900 UGI SaveSmart rebate to lower the cost of an insulation and air sealing project at their Hanover Street office. The project is expected to save 77 MMBtu’s of natural gas annually, while reducing drafts and improving employee comfort.

“This building was built in 1907,” said Robyn Dingle, Operations Director for the Chamber, “so there were many opportunities to improve the building infrastructure. The UGI rebate helped us to complete the entire project, instead of just a portion. And the program was incredibly easy to work with—our rep took care of everything!”

The goal of the project was to increase insulation in the 3^rd floor upper attic, as well as address air sealing in the basement – an area of significant uncontrolled air infiltration and humidity into the building.

Energy Smart Home Improvement furnished and installed NuWool Premium loose fill cellulose in the attic area. By doing so, this addition achieved Energy Star® recommended optimum R-60 for attic insulation.

In the basement, Energy Smart cleaned out and air sealed large penetrations in the basement foundation wall using 1-part and/or 2-part spray foam. This resulted in conservative insulation coverage, as well as providing a superior air seal and limiting insect entry points.

By combining historic preservation with modern efficiency upgrades, the Carlisle Chamber of Commerce has not only protected its century-old building but positioned itself for decades of reduced energy costs and improved comfort. It’s a reminder that even the oldest buildings can benefit from smart, cost-effective improvements.

The UGI SaveSmart Rebate Program provides cash incentives for UGI business customers who install energy efficient HVAC or process equipment or make other improvements that reduce gas consumption. Incentives are available for most business customers, including small businesses, industrial customers, non-profit organizations, government buildings, schools, and multifamily facilities with commercial gas meters. A separate suite of rebates is available for residential gas customers.
