UGI Rebate Helps University of Scranton Build Energy‑Efficient Facility

30 Jun 2026

The University of Scranton’s new 90,000-square-foot academic and workforce development facility is designed to meet the highest efficiency, cost-saving, and healthy green-building standards. A $100,000 energy efficient rebate check from UGI helped offset the cost of the project.

The University of Scranton's Weiss Hall

Weiss Hall opened in August and is designed to meet Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification standards, reflecting the University’s commitment to sustainable, efficient operations.

The University’s facilities team sought a heating and hot water solution that could support year‑round use while managing long‑term energy costs and emissions. UGI’s Save Smart program is designed to help commercial customers achieve exactly those goals while shortening equipment payback. Through the Save Smart Commercial Custom Rebate Program, eligible UGI gas customers can receive incentives of up to $100,000 per project for improvements that use natural gas more efficiently.

Weiss Hall features 96% efficient boilers for space heating and 96% efficient water heaters (pictured), along with a computer‑controlled building automation system that monitors room temperatures, airflows and occupancy to optimize natural gas and electricity usage.

The result is a modern facility that supports the University’s mission while using less energy than a standard design, with the Save Smart rebate helping offset the cost of high‑efficiency equipment and controls.
