Be Prepared for Hurricane Season

By being prepared and staying informed about hurricane warnings and evacuation orders, individuals and communities can better protect themselves and mitigate the potential damage caused by these powerful natural disasters. 

The strong winds from hurricanes can easily snap trees and bring down poles and spans of wire, leading to widespread power outages and property damage.
It’s important to be aware that hurricane response efforts can be delayed by safety concerns, including flooding and road closures. These obstacles make it critical for communities to stay informed and prepared for potential delays in assistance.

How to prepare:​​​​​

• Make sure to write down and keep handy the contact information for emergency services, family members, friends, and healthcare providers.
• Have a backup plan, including distinguishing a backup location where you can go if necessary, and/or investing in a backup power source, such an electric generator or uninterruptible power supply. This is crucial if you depend on medical equipment.
• Educate your household on how to safely operate your equipment and backup systems. Be sure to label equipment with clear instructions.
• Have an emergency kit with food, water, medications, an NOAA weather radio, blankets, batteries, flashlights, chargers, and more.
• Don’t forget to include your pets when preparing: pack their food, water, and medications and make sure you have a plan to keep them safe and secured once the storm hits.

If you are without power:

• Call UGI at 800-276-2722 to report the outage, including any outage-related emergencies such as downed wires. For your safety and to ensure your issues are addressed as soon as possible, please do not use social media or email to report outages or electrical emergencies.
• If you know anyone who is without power and needs aid, please contact us at 800-276-2722.
• PA 211 is available to access free and confidential crisis and emergency counseling related to disaster assistance and more.

If you are encounter fallen wires:

• Stay away from fallen wires and warn others to keep away. Always assume that wires are energized and do not touch them. If you encounter fallen wires, call UGI immediately at 800-276-2722 and contact the police.
